About the Presenters

Valerie Hickey

Global Director, Environment, Natural Resources and Blue Economy Global Practice (ENB GP), The World Bank 

Valerie Hickey is the Global Director of Environment, Natural Resources and Blue Economy (ENB) at the World Bank. Valerie takes this role having worked as the manager for Advisory and Operations in the Climate Change Group, where she oversaw the implementation of the World Bank’s commitments on climate change, climate mainstreaming and climate finance, and before that the Practice Manager for ENB in Latin America and the Caribbean where she managed a cross-sectoral team that supported countries and communities on issues related to climate change, sustainable forest management, integrated conservation and development, integrated coastal zone management, fisheries, pollution management and environmental health, environmental economics and environmental risk management.   

Christopher Brett

Lead Agribusiness Specialist, Agriculture & Food Global Practice, The World Bank

Christopher Brett was appointed as the Lead Agribusiness Specialist with the World Bank in November 2016 and joined the Agriculture and Food Global Agricultural Practice, based in Washington, DC. He has a master’s degree in Management for Agricultural Development from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. He has more than thirty years of experience working within the public, private and voluntary sectors in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.    

Nichola Dyer

Senior Advisor to the Safe Seaweed Coalition (SSC)

Nichola Dyer serves as Senior Advisor to the Safe Seaweed Coalition (SSC), advising on strategy and governance, designing and moderating events, representing the SSC in fora such as the Aquatic and Blue Food Coalition, managing its interns, and chairing key SSC meetings. She retired from the World Bank Group in 2019 after 26 years of service. Highlights of her Bank career include managing the $1.5b Global Agriculture and Food Security Program; developing greenfield operational engagements on excluded minorities and disability; leading the ethics office, where she built the Declaration of Interests Program; and establishing the office in Gabon. She obtained her MSc in Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Chris Sworder

Senior Manager, Hatch Innovation Services

Chris Sworder has been active in agriculture and food innovation for 7+ years. At Hatch Blue, he works with the senior management team of Hatch Innovation Services and manages a portfolio of projects. Working with Cleantech Group, Chris ran the Agriculture and Food research and consulting practice, working with corporate innovation, venture, capital, government, and entrepreneurial clients globally, but focused on North America and Europe. He has expertise in sustainability, climate, and ESG consulting, as well as providing support for corporates and investors looking to partner with, or invest in, innovation. Chris has lived and worked mainly in London and San Francisco. Chris holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London and an MA from Oxford University.

David Evans

Senior Industry Specialist for Animal Protein, International Finance Corporation (TBC)

David Evansjoined the IFC in 2018 as Senior Industry Specialist for Animal Protein and is based in Washington, DC. He has a Degree in Veterinary Science and an MBA and has specialized in livestock production and value chains covering all the major species. He has over 35 years of experience working in the private sector across many countries and held positions in most areas of the livestock supply chain, from production to retail.

Dr. Harrison Charo Karisa

Senior Fisheries Specialist (Aquaculture), the World Bank Group

Dr. Harrison Charo Karisais Senior Fisheries Specialist (Aquaculture) at the World Bank Group where he is currently engaged in global efforts of the Aquabusiness Investment Advisory Platform and PROBLUE to support governments and the private sector to assist aquaculture development, strengthen livelihoods, and enhance food and nutrition security. He has over 25 years working in fisheries and aquaculture research and development and was formerly WorldFish Country Director for Egypt and Nigeria, and Secretary for the African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society. He holds a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences (Fish Breeding, Genetics, and Aquaculture) from Wageningen University of Life Sciences in the Netherlands and an MSc in Biodiversity from Swedish Agricultural University, Sweden.
